Kurzgeschichten mit 50 Wörtern: Mini Sagas

In 1982 Brian Aldiss, internationally known as a science fiction writer, was writing his trilogy Helliconia and he found this to be rather exhausting. He needed something to allow him to relax. “The vision of something short – to be written in a minute, or five (…) was inviting”. This was the “invention” of the mini saga. Aldiss convinced others to follow his lead and soon there were mini saga competitions throughout the U.K.
Even the BBC offered a platform to writers of mini sagas. Such famous people as Salman Rushdie, HRH Princess Margaret and others are known to have contributed to these competitions as well.
The mini saga is a full-fledged short “short story” including an exposition, a main part and an ending with a twist. It must consist of exactly 50 words (no more, no less) and a title which may have up to 15 words maximum.
Enjoy the mini saga samples created in the “11f English class”. (Theresa Hogrefe)

A mini saga . . . hmm, what could that be? Our teacher told us to write one, but how will I do that? There’s only one thing I know: I have to write it in about 50 words, not one more or less. Anything I will write can be correct. So I …

Shortest short story
I have to write a mini saga for homework with 50 words, exactly 50, but I do not know how to. There are 27 words left and I have to find a title for my short story. That is the shortest story I have ever written. Run out of words.
Julia

I’m writing a short story.
A very short story – it’s about 50 words long.
But … the problem is: I have no idea what to write about.
In any case, I can’t write with such a “……………”pencil.
It is too small to write with it!
Now I’m out of …

Words are made out of letters. Letters are made from the alphabet. The alphabet is learned by small kids in secondary school. School is filled with teachers who want me to write a mini saga. My mini saga is really dumb. I hope you can forget it as soon as possible.

Short Story Try I

He sat down on the chair next to her, he smelled her beautiful perfume, he liked her brown curled hair, he liked her shaved legs. He wants to speak to her, but he is too bashful. Ten minutes later he asked her for her name and she answered: I’m Gregor……

(a coincidence with people who have the same name may be quite unintentional – the editor)

The very first date
“Hey!”
“Hey! How are you?”
“Great, thanks”
“Wanna go?”
“Okay”
“I think we should go to the restaurant and eat something”
“Hmmm, why not?”
Ten minutes later.
“Now, I’ll start with tomatoe soup”
“Water, please”
“Oh, I’d live to get chicken”
“Potatoes”
“Uhmm, why are you here?”
“No idea!”
“Asshole!”

“Tell me, what’s the matter?!”
“You ask what the matter is? Look, I can’t write short stories!”
“Oh, but that doesn’t matter, write something about me!”
“I can’t write stories, so I can’t write anything about you!”
“It doesn’t matter, write about something else!”
“I haven’t enough words, DOES MATTER!”

Jane took all of her courage to accost this handsome man whom she has written the last three months every week one letter, without getting any answer. This effort to contact this breathtaking southerner stayed also without success. Suddenly a voice behind her whispered: “He’s illiterate and only speaks Portuguese”.

Dear diary,
this will be one of the last entries. The virus has spread through my body and I’ve only little time to live. Before I have to die I want to say some last words. I don’t regret anything I’ve done in my life. My last wish is to …..
Sabrina

Okay, now I will write my dumb, terrible, unintelligent, nonsense homework … oh, my God, it really doesn’t have sense … no sense!
It is only dumb and unintelligent and I don’t want to waste my time writing a dumb and unintelligent homework! Okay, now I will concentrate and write it … Done!
Sylvia

In fear of one’s life
She had the feeling of being lost as the dangerous, frightening monster came towards her. It had driven her into a corner, she was looking for a way to escape . . . no chance. Nobody would hear her terrified screams . . .
“Get down from the chair!” her husband said. “I caught the rat!”
